Tiffany Wei

Tiffany Wei is a Chinese-American interdisciplinary artist who received her BFA in Illustration Design from ArtCenter College of Design. She is currently based in Los Angeles, California. Her creative work consists of digital illustration, embroidery work, and ceramics. In her practice, there is a consistent use of patterns and emphasis on detail. Inspired by fashion and textiles, Tiffany also strives to create wearable art by merging different practices and conceptual ideas.

In my artwork, I delve into diverse realms that meld the familiar with the fantastical, each piece evoking an unsettling feeling masked by beauty. Through an abstract series of images, I weave narratives that invite viewers into the worlds I've imagined.

My creative endeavors extend beyond digital illustration into ceramics and embroidery. Intricate patterns, initially created as illustrations, are transferred onto clay by hand or fabric with needle and thread. These tactile pieces are inspired by the modular design of traditional Chinese textiles and ceramics. From two-dimensional illustrations to tangible pieces, I seek to uncover connections between lines, shapes, and forms.

The costumes I craft serve as wearable art, blurring the boundaries between clothing and gallery exhibit. A sculptural feel is added to the wearables through unconventional mediums such as 3D pens or clay. My aim is to reimagine traditional garments through modern construction techniques.

Regardless of the medium, my intention remains constant: to tap into the ethereal, inviting viewers to journey beyond the confines of the mundane into realms where beauty and unease intertwine. My work serves as a conduit through which narratives unfold, using abstract imagery and tactile experiences.

This piece is my interpretation of the Moirai or the three Fates who are responsible for spinning the threads of destiny. The hierarchy of the figures directly reflects the passage of life. A continuous thread flows throughout the piece until it reaches the bottom edge and is about to be cut.
